What not to wear to your outdoor family photoshoot!
What Not to Wear to a Photo Session: 10 Essential Tips
Preparing for a family photo session involves a lot of planning, especially when it comes to choosing outfits. One of the most common questions I get is, “What should we wear?” While there are many great suggestions out there, I thought it would be fun to share some tips on what not to wear. These insights come from years of experience photographing families in Dublin and might help you avoid some common pitfalls.
Here are some photos of families who nailed their outfits. Of course, this is just my personal opinion, and you’re free to wear whatever you like! :)
1. Avoid Ill-Fitting Clothes
This might seem obvious, but it happens more often than you’d think. For moms, avoid low necklines since kids will be playing and cuddling with you. Choose something that won’t require constant adjustment or reveal bra straps. For dads, make sure your shirt is long enough to cover your torso when lifting your arms – you’ll likely be playing and swinging the kids around.
2. Skip Uncomfortable Shoes
Our sessions are active, involving walking and moving around. Many locations are on uneven ground like fields or beaches. Opt for comfortable shoes that allow you to run and play with your children. Stylish yet comfy shoes are the way to go. Also, don't forget about the socks; they’ll be visible too.
3. Avoid Large Patterns
Large patterns can dominate a photo, taking the focus away from faces. Smaller patterns work well and can bring an outfit together. Layers, textures, and neutrals are more visually appealing and create a warmer image.
4. Steer Clear of Short Skirts or Dresses
When choosing a dress, think about how it will feel when sitting or holding a child. Short skirts or dresses can be tricky. If you opt for a shorter dress, go for something flowy that can be easily adjusted when sitting.
5. Avoid Headbands and Large Bows for Small Children
While cute, headbands and large bows often slide down during play. To avoid constantly readjusting them, use an elastic band if your child's hair needs to be pulled back.
6. Don’t Wear Coats with Plans to Remove Them
If it’s cold, dress in layers instead of planning to take off a coat. Cold kids are unhappy kids, and putting on and taking off coats repeatedly will lead to discomfort. Keep everyone warm and content.
7. Skip Neon or Bright Colors
Neon and bright colors can cast an unwanted hue onto the skin. Muted colors and earth tones are more flattering and better suited for photos. A pop of color is fine, but avoid anything too bright that distracts from the overall look. Check out what colours work well for photos
8. Avoid Hats That Cover Your Eyes
While hats can be stylish, baseball caps or floppy hats can cast shadows on your face. If hats are your style, consider a beanie or bring the hat out for a few shots at the end.
9. Keep Phones and Keys Out of Pockets
Phones and keychains can show through your clothes and need to be removed every time you sit down. Leave your phone in the car or hand it to me during the shoot. A key fob is easier to manage than a bulky keychain.
10. Don’t Forget Bike Shorts or Nappy Covers
For little girls in skirts or dresses, make sure to use bike shorts or nappy covers. We’ll be playing and moving around, and while kids don’t mind, you might.
Bonus Tip: Be Yourself
You’ll look and feel uncomfortable if you’re not dressing as yourself. Wear what makes you feel good and comfortable. This is your photoshoot – have fun with it!
