What colour to wear for family photos.
As a Dublin family photographer, I know that choosing outfits for a family photo session can feel overwhelming. One of the most common questions I get is, "Can you give us some tips on what to wear?" Don't worry, I've got you covered with some tried and true tips. These insights come from photographing hundreds of families, and while these are my personal opinions, they've consistently worked well in the past.
Earth Tones Are Always a Winner
Why Earth Tones?
They photograph beautifully and are neutral.
They complement the natural Dublin surroundings.
Easy to coordinate as they all look good together.
They add warmth to the photo without distracting from the people.
Layering Adds Depth and Texture
Layering creates movement and interest in photos. It allows you to introduce a new color or simple pattern. Layers can be easily removed to change up the look and keep you warm. Incorporate a Pop of Color, But Keep It Soft A pop of color can add vibrancy to your photos. Choose colors that complement your overall color palette and don't dominate the picture.
Colors to Avoid
Neons: They draw too much attention.
Bright Red: Can be difficult to photograph and might cast onto the skin; opt for burgundy instead.
Black: Can dull the image if overused; use it sparingly or in layers. Jeans are fine.
Bright White: Often looks blue in photos and can wash out skin tones; cream or taupe are better options.
Bright Blue: Draws too much attention; choose softer, muted blues instead.
Patterns and Solids
If one person wears a pattern, coordinate the others in solid colors. Avoid small checks or stripes, as they can create unwanted visual effects in photos. The focus should be on faces, not clothing.
Don’t Forget the Blanket
I often ask families to sit for some shots, and the blanket will be visible in the photos. Choose a blanket that complements your outfits. A fun pattern like a Mexican blanket works well, but ensure it doesn't clash with your clothes. Gray or beige blankets are always safe choices. Make sure the blanket is washable, as it might get dirty depending on the season.
Soft Color Palette
If you're going for a softer look, keep all colors muted and neutral. Colors like off-white, gray, cream, and taupe work well. A gentle pop of color is a great addition. Dress for the Weather
Cold Weather:
Dress warmly with jackets and hats that complement your outfits. Avoid puffy coats or vests for children, as they can add bulk and block their faces.
By keeping these tips in mind, you'll be well-prepared for a successful and visually pleasing family photo session.
